2,3-Oxidosqualene is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of sterols such as lanosterol , cycloartenol, and cholesterol . It is also an intermediate in the biosynthesis of the triterpenoid beta-amyrin. (3R,S)-Oxidosqualene is an impurity in the synthesis of Squalene 2,3:22,23-Dioxide which is accumulated intracellularly during the inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis in Chinese hamster ovary cells. (3R,S)-Oxidosqualene is also a precursor to Ginsenosides found in rice. (3R,S)-Oxidosqualene is the substrate for the enzyme Oxidosqualene cyclase
